The Barcelona weekend of the 2024 FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) unfolded into a saga of triumph for BMW Motorrad Motorsport and the ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team, with Toprak Razgatlioglu leading the charge.
In the first main race, Razgatlioglu fulfilled his declared goal by clinching victory aboard the BMW M 1000 RR, marking his first win for BMW Motorrad Motorsport and the team’s first win in a main race. Securing pole position in the Superpole qualifying session, Razgatlioglu showcased his prowess, setting a new track record and subsequently claiming victory after an exhilarating battle for the lead. Teammate Michael van der Mark also demonstrated strong performance, securing fourth place in the Superpole but ultimately finishing ninth in the first race.

Following the celebrations, Markus Flasch, Head of BMW Motorrad, lauded Razgatlioglu’s achievement, emphasising the significance of the win for the team and BMW Motorrad Motorsport. Marc Bongers, BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director, echoed the sentiment, expressing his elation and confidence in the team’s capabilities for the remainder of the season.

Reflecting on his victory, Razgatlioglu expressed his happiness and gratitude to his team, highlighting the importance of the win on a circuit where he had not previously tasted victory. Van der Mark, while not securing a podium finish, acknowledged the overall success of the team and expressed optimism for future races.

The momentum carried into Sunday’s races, with Razgatlioglu claiming victory in the Superpole Race and securing a third-place finish in the second main race. Van der Mark returned to the front group with a fourth-place finish, further solidifying the team’s strong performance.

Looking ahead, the team sets its sights on the next round at Assen, with confidence and determination to build upon their successes at Barcelona. With Razgatlioglu’s stellar performance and the team’s collective effort, the BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team remains poised for continued success in the WorldSBK championship.

Reactions to Round 2 in Barcelona.

Shaun Muir, ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team Principal:Leaving Australia was difficult under the circumstances with Toprak’s engine failure, we clearly were under a bit of pressure going into this Catalonia round, a circuit where we know we have low grip conditions which definitely do not suit the BMW M 1000 RR. The town day test the week before the race was vital to us, It gave us a good base to work from, for both Michael and Toprak. So when we entered into the actual race weekend we had a reasonable idea where we could end up, whether we would have enough pace to be on the podium remained a question at that time.

As weekend unfolded it was clear that Michael and Toprak had sufficient pace to easily be in the top six, and that proved so in the free practice sessions. Qualifying was inch perfect almost with both riders on the front two rows of the grid and Toprak taking pole position was sensational for both of the guys. I think it proved all the hard work that they put in over the previous weeks, and the racing results speak for themselves. It’s great for the team, for the project, for the entire group to get these results. It’s a reward for all the hard work that everyone has put in.

From my side personally, it’s been a long battle. I think we finally proven that the BMW M 1000 RR is a bike that can win races and we’ve proven that now. We’ve also proven that Michael being so very close to Toprak in the in the race results and in the time over the line, just how much ground we have made up with this bike and we’re looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Markus Flasch, Head of BMW Motorrad: “Congratulations to everyone on this fantastic win! It was great to cheer with the team in the pit box. Toprak has shown that he is a very special rider and person. We knew he had a bike capable of winning with the BMW M 1000 RR, and it’s fantastic that we could prove it already on the second race weekend. Thanks to everyone for the hard work, to Toprak, to our BMW Motorrad Motorsport crew, and to the ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team. Let‘s keep it up!”

Marc Bongers, BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director: “Before we came here, we hoped to claim another podium. That was the target after a good test last week but we also saw that the Ducatis were extremely strong. To come away four trophies, pole position, two wins and one podium, is absolutely magnificent. I am speechless, honestly. It is extremely good for the project and I am even looking further forward to the rest of the season which gives me more confidence. Not just Toprak, also Mickey did a fantastic job, with fourth in qualifying yesterday, sixth in this morning’s Superpole Race and a very strong fourth position in main race two. It’s well deserved. I just enjoy the moment right now. It is highly emotional, this weekend had only ups. We’ve had enough downs in the past years so it’s good to get through the valley of tears. On the Bonovo side, the weekend was more difficult but in the final race, Garrett and Scott were in the ball park so we can build from there and like I said, there are better races to come. Overall, this weekend leaves me overwhelmed and very pleased.”

Toprak Razgatlıoğlu (#54 BMW M 1000 RR, ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team):

Superpole: P1 | Race 1: P1 | Superpole Race: P1 | Race 2: P3

“I am really happy for this moment because this is a dream. Not only for me, for BMW and the team. We claimed two victories at Barcelona, and for me it has been an amazing weekend. Especially today’s last race was a very hard, the pace was really strong. Alvaro started normal and then pushed very hard. I just tried to follow him but I felt a lot of spinning and closed the gas because in a 20-lap race you need a good tyre with good grid for the last five laps. But in general, I am very happy because we were on the podium in all three races, including two wins. Especially the Superpole Race was incredible, when I passed Alvaro in the last corner. I think this is in my top three overtakes of my career. I am also very happy for BMW. We are coming step by step and I think we will be stronger on the other race tracks. Everyone is very happy and will now work even harder. We have a very good package. We are coming, we are not so far and this year I think we can get many wins and I hope that we will be World Champions. I hope!”

Michael van der Mark (#60 BMW M 1000 RR, ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team):

Superpole: P4 | Race 1: P9 | Superpole Race: P6 | Race 2: P4

“Honestly I think for the whole team it has been a fantastic weekend. This was one of our worst tracks and to see Toprak getting two wins, another podium and the pole position, was great, and I had some really strong results this weekend, too. So I am really happy, really satisfied with the improvement on the bikes. Honestly, to finish P6 this morning was quite good, but to finish fourth in race two was a big relief for me. It’s nice to see that I get back on a really good level and I’m just really happy with the whole weekend. I think it gives the whole team a big boost, and also for me, for the next race at Assen which I am really looking forward to. At least now we arrive there knowing how good the package can be.”
